Notes from Dee
Dear Friends,
I no sooner settle down to enjoy the summer, when suddenly! It's over, or almost. Nowadays, college kids and even some high school kids have to be back at school by the end of August, especially if they play sports and have to start practicing with their teams. I teach Middle school and I have a daughter in college and a three year old granddaughter starting school, so our family summer always ends sooner than I would like. It's over all too soon, which makes our days together that much more precious. I hate having to wait a whole year for summer to come around again, and I'm very blessed that we can still spend a few weeks in the summer vacationing somewhere we enjoy. So back to school, and ready for the energizing activities of fall... but I will miss the lazy days until next year. I hope your summer was a good one, with time to relax, and even read!
Love and Blessings,
Dee
Doreen “Dee” Whitfield’s Novel
“Catching Hell In My Church Trying to Get to Heaven”
From an inspired and captivating voice comes a novel that probes faith, love, passion, fears, betrayals, triumphs and pushes the boundaries of Christian fiction.
Dee Whitfield weaves a story that is to some humorous, to some inspirational, to some optimistic, to some raw and maybe too hot to handle with truth. “It’s like fire shut up in your bones,” the heat rises from the pages and only the fire hydrant of Jesus’ cool waters will quench the flames from each page. To some it’s just what a Sistah or Brother needs when they relate to “Catching Hell In My Church Trying to Get to Heaven.”
Doreen “Dee” C. Whitfield appeals to men and women alike with her stimulating first novel of trials, joy, pain and determination in Christ.

HOT OFF THE PRESS
Jacksonville, Florida ---Dee Whitfield’ Sistahs So Saved is the first release from her publishing company Chosen Vessels Publishing & Entertainment, Inc.
Fifty-something Garcia has any information on any body in the church, dial 1-800 Garcia. Garcia’s undelivered tongue runs faster than you can blink your eyes! She has a group of One Size Fits All group of friends that are as righteous to their Club Gossippers as followers of Oprah’s Book Club. Her deliverance and restoration comes at a price that is higher than any saved or unsaved person would want to pay. If this sounds like the unusual church of the times, credit the imagination of Jacksonville, Florida author Doreen “Dee” C. Whitfield, one of the nations emerging writers of African-American, oriented religiously themed fiction. The story line is from Whitfield’s latest, Sistahs So Saved, her third book and first book of short stories. If the somewhat less than pristine protagonists in her stories are based on real people, Whitfield isn't saying.
Whitfield doesn't mind being called a “quiet storm” in Christian fiction because she coined the term herself when she, emerged with her kingdom Sistah flavored stories of women professing salvation.
The Christian Book Association’s conservative members eyebrows will only be raised in laughter when reading Sistahs So Saved, being reminded of Proverbs 17:22; “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” If laughter is indeed the best medicine, Whitfield wants to be the free pharmacy.
Whitfield’s book is not without a little spice, Sistahs So Saved is a distinctly earthy Christian book, geared to the African American market. She was criticized because two of her characters drank wine, and that she dared to write about it. Her books are not unadventurous, demure fare. In There Is Peace in God, the characters don't always fit the model of proper behavior for the "saved": A mother who is a claims examiner by day and dances in a strip club by night, has also been convicted of murder in self defense. Her fifteen year old daughter Peace is a fly girl, straight from the hood.
Whitfield’s mix of humor, moralizing and a hint of scandal is quietly revolutionizing Christian fiction in the African American community. Her freshman effort, Flavors of Life, a book of poetry (Neighborhoodpress, 2001) Sold over 400 copies at the 24th Annual White Rose Luncheon and Scholarship Benefit sponsored by the Links Inc., an international social club of professional women, in West Palm Beach Florida. Palm Beach Post writer, Janis Fontaine, wrote; “Dee Whitfield’s poetry is inspiring, stirring, penetrating and passionate. Her spoken word performance is unparalleled.”
While Whitfield’s blessings has come from her God given hilarious slice-of-life observations of church life, it also comes from a publishing industry that, in the last decade, has shown more willingness to publish black and Christians authors—both previously considered niche markets.
Anchored by the Word of God through The Potter’s House Christian Fellowship, Jacksonville Florida, under the Leadership of Bishop Vaughn & Narlene McLaughlin. Whitfield does not compromise her writing for fame and fortune. She does however, desire to publish books that are culturally relevant and Biblically accurate. “That does not mean any of my characters will be without flaws. My stories are written to simply guide the reader to the cross, back to it or repentance when needed. Every story must glorify God or my writing will just be in vain.”. Whitfield says.
Whitfield is expected to release her new novel “Catching Hell In My Church ~ Trying to Get to Heaven” December 2008.
